Tulum taxi driver attacked by union members following Uber launch
A taxi driver in Tulum, José Ramírez, was subjected to verbal and physical aggression by members of his own union, Tiburones del Caribe, following the recent launch of Uber in the region. The incident occurred near the south entrance of Jaguar Park.
Ramírez, 52, reported that the confrontation arose due to territorial disputes. He stated that he was transporting passengers and did not use a ride-hailing app for the trip, but was targeted by fellow drivers who mistook his actions for those of an Uber partner. Video footage shows men in white uniforms surrounding his vehicle and attempting to open the doors.
Uber began operations in Tulum on October 20, offering incentives to local taxi drivers to join the platform. While the union leadership is reportedly aware of the incident, no official statement has been released regarding the protection of drivers involved in these disputes.
