Tulum tourism faces sargassum challenges and new hotel developments
The tourism sector in Tulum is navigating both environmental challenges and new development opportunities. The Tulum Hotel Association (AHT) has stated that closing coastal establishments during sargassum arrivals is unfeasible, as the seaweed phenomenon now affects the Mexican Caribbean for eight to nine months of the year. AHT President David Ortiz Mena warned that seasonal closures would lead to significant economic and social consequences, including permanent job losses and reduced tourism activity.
Hotels are facing high operational costs to manage the seaweed, with some spending millions of pesos monthly on beach cleaning—amounts that can exceed double their electricity expenses. Ortiz Mena emphasized that the issue has become structural rather than seasonal, requiring permanent strategies such as offshore seaweed collection and improved disposal methods.
In a separate development, the 'Tulum Renace' strategy has secured an international alliance for the opening of the UMusic Hotel & Beach Club Tulum, scheduled for December 2026. This project is a collaboration between UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle, Inmobiliaria, and Thor Urbana, with support from the Government of Quintana Roo and the Federal Secretariat of Tourism. The complex will feature 57 rooms, a beach club, and a creative center for music, audiovisual production, and digital content creation, aiming to diversify the local economy through the creative industries.
