Tumaco man arrested for storing 4,235 shark fins

Authorities in Tumaco, Nariño, have arrested William Leonardo de la Cruz Valverde for the illegal storage and attempted sale of 4,235 shark fins. The seizure took place during a raid on a seafood commercial establishment in the El Bajito neighborhood.

Investigators recovered 13 sacks containing more than 376 kilograms of fins, which reportedly originated from over 1,000 sharks. The species identified include hammerhead, tiger, silky, thresher, copper, and blacktip sharks. Prosecutors allege the fins were intended for transport and sale in Ecuador.

According to the Fiscalía General de la Nación, the fins were obtained through finning, a practice where fins are removed from live animals before they are discarded into the sea. De la Cruz Valverde has been charged with wildlife trafficking and the illicit exploitation of renewable natural resources. Although he denied the charges, a judge ordered him to remain in prison while the judicial process continues.
