Tumbes initiative aims to expand rural digital connectivity
In Tumbes, Peru, an initiative led by the Peru-Ecuador Binational Development Plan for the Border Region aims to expand digital connectivity in rural communities. Working with the Regional Government of Tumbes and the company Internet para Todos (IPT), the proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The plan seeks to utilize existing, unused telecommunications infrastructure from the Tumbes Regional Fiber Optic Project to deploy 4G technology. This approach aims to provide mobile internet and telephony services while avoiding the need for new construction. Enhancing connectivity is intended to improve access to education, health, and economic activities, while also strengthening communication and emergency response capabilities during El Niño weather events.
To ensure viability, the project is evaluating implementation through tax-based mechanisms, such as ‘Obras por Impuestos’ (Works for Taxes), to encourage private sector participation in developing these connectivity solutions.
