James Cody Bryant charged in connection with Tumbler Ridge shooting

James Cody Bryant, a 30-year-old resident of Bellingham, Washington, has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country. Federal authorities allege Bryant played a significant role in assisting Jesse Van Rootselaar, the 18-year-old shooter responsible for the February 10 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

According to the FBI and US prosecutors, Bryant and Van Rootselaar maintained contact via Discord for months leading up to the attack. Bryant is accused of providing tactical advice, technical guidance, and financial assistance—including approximately $100 for items such as shoes and a lighter. Prosecutors further allege that Bryant agreed to livestream the attack on Twitch to maximize the shooter's notoriety and even assisted in testing livestreaming equipment.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of eight to nine people, including Van Rootselaar's mother and half-brother, as well as five students and an educational assistant at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Van Rootselaar died by suicide at the scene. If convicted, Bryant faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
