Tumbler Ridge shooting investigation targets social media and AI firms

An FBI conspiracy complaint has revealed that the Tumbler Ridge shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, engaged in extensive online planning for a deadly attack with James Bryant. According to the complaint, the pair used Discord to discuss tactics, locations, and weaponry for months, and intended to livestream the murders on Twitch.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Mike Harrington stated that Van Rootselaar and Bryant met approximately three years ago on the now-defunct Omegle messaging app. At the time of their initial contact, Van Rootselaar was roughly 15 years old and Bryant was 27. The Omegle platform was subsequently shut down following lawsuits regarding child safety.

British Columbia Premier David Eby is calling for increased federal regulation, arguing that social media and AI companies must be held legally accountable for reporting conversations involving potential harm. Eby noted that the B.C. government is already pursuing legal action against OpenAI regarding its alleged role in assisting Van Rootselaar with the February 10 attack, which resulted in eight deaths.
