Tumpat residents face congestion and safety risks from aging bridge

More than 2,000 residents in three villages in Tumpat—Kampung Teluk Jering, Kampung Chenderung, and Kampung Cherang Melintang—are facing daily difficulties due to a narrow, 50-year-old bridge. The structure only allows for single-lane traffic, forcing commuters to take turns, which causes significant congestion during morning and evening peak hours.

Local residents have expressed concerns regarding the bridge's structural integrity. Following a major flood in 2024, there are fears that the bridge is no longer stable, as it reportedly shakes when heavy vehicles pass over it. Residents noted that ongoing riverbank construction and dredging projects may further compromise the aging structure. Given that the bridge is the primary access point for these communities, locals are calling for a new bridge to ensure safety and smooth connectivity.
