Tuna deaths recur on Çeşme and Karaburun coasts
Mass tuna deaths have resurfaced along the coasts of Çeşme and Karaburun in Turkey. The Çeşme Peninsula Environmental Association (ÇEŞÇEP) reported that this follows a period last year when approximately 1,500 dead tuna washed ashore.
A study by Bursa Uludağ University, published in the journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, identifies the bacterium Lactococcus garvieae as a primary factor. The research indicates that the bacterium becomes highly active when seawater temperatures exceed 15-16 degrees Celsius. In the Aegean Sea, summer temperatures reaching 22-25 degrees Celsius create ideal conditions for the disease, which affects internal organs such as the heart, liver, and spleen before causing skin lesions and scale loss.
ÇEŞÇEP has highlighted that the combination of rising water temperatures and organic pollution from dense fish farming in the Gerence and Ildır bays may exacerbate the situation. While the study did not prove that feed waste directly transmits the disease, the association suggests that pollution and heat together facilitate bacterial spread. The association has called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to provide transparent sample analysis results and involve independent scientists in the investigation.
