Livestock producers in Tunceli are facing a critical shortage of shepherds, threatening the sustainability of small ruminant farming. Despite monthly wages rising from 130,000 lira last year to between 100,000 and 150,000 lira this year, finding reliable personnel remains difficult.

To address the labor gap, many producers have turned to foreign workers, specifically from Afghanistan. However, producers report that even with high wages and provided necessities such as food, housing, and tobacco, these workers often leave the jobs unexpectedly.

Local producers, including Mehmet Demir and Önder Erdoğan, noted that the rising costs of labor, combined with increasing expenses for feed and medicine, are making it difficult to maintain profitable operations. Zeynel Erdoğan, President of the Tunceli Sheep and Goat Breeders Association, warned that if the shepherd shortage is not resolved, there could be a significant decrease in total livestock numbers.
