Tunceli preserves traditional Anatolian beekeeping methods

In Tunceli, Turkey, traditional Anatolian beekeeping methods are being preserved alongside modern production techniques. These ancestral practices involve creating hives from woven fences coated with mud, providing a natural shelter for bees.

Unlike modern methods, this traditional approach involves minimal intervention; bees are not fed or medicated, relying entirely on nectar gathered from nature. Kazım Doğan, President of the Tunceli Beekeepers Association, noted that while Turkey has become a major global honey producer, these traditional methods serve as a vital cultural heritage and a way to build consumer trust in honey quality.

Local production expectations for the region are high, with estimates ranging between 900 and over 1,000 tons. The practice remains deeply embedded in local culture, reflected in regional terminology and traditional rituals surrounding the honey harvest.
