Tuncer Ustael sentenced to life imprisonment in Turkish Palu family case

Turkey’s Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) upheld a life‑sentence for Tuncer Ustael, confirming the lower‑court finding that he acted with possible intent to kill child Melike Tahnal. The court acquitted Ustael of the child‑sexual‑abuse charge and also cleared other members of the Palu family – Harun Palu, Havva Palu, İsa Palu, Fatih Palu, Ayşe Palu and Emine Ustael – of murder, while dismissing the illegal‑burial allegation.

The case, known as the “Palu family case,” began in 2008 when Meryem Tahnal and her six‑year‑old daughter Melike vanished in Kocaeli’s Körfez district. After an initial investigation yielded no concrete evidence, the file was closed. Public attention revived in 2018 after the family appeared on a televised program, prompting a new probe, arrests, and extensive searches.
