Tunisia prepares for 2027 budget amid agricultural and economic shifts

Tunisia is preparing its 2027 state budget, which includes significant allocations for social support and public sector wages. The draft budget proposes 11.846 billion dinars for subsidies, with over 7 billion dinars earmarked for electricity and fuel. Additionally, wage expenditures are projected to rise by 8.2% to 27.349 billion dinars to support employment and public sector salary increases.

The agricultural sector faces mixed outlooks. The date harvest for the 2026-2027 season is expected to decline by 12.4%, falling to approximately 354,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, the government is planning to import 110,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate to support the 2026-2027 cereal campaign. Water resources show signs of recovery, with dam filling rates reaching 46% as of late October 2026.

In the financial sector, the insurance industry reported 13% growth in turnover for the first half of 2026, though rising claims are impacting profitability. Tourism remains a vital revenue driver, with over 8 million visitors recorded so far in 2026, contributing 6.89 billion dinars in revenue despite a slight decrease in arrivals from neighboring markets like Algeria and Libya.
