Tunisia and Algeria show progress in global innovation and tourism indices

Tunisia has risen five places in the 2026 Global Innovation Index, moving from 76th to 71st out of 139 countries. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Tunisia ranks fourth in Africa, trailing Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco. The nation's strengths include human capital and research, scientific production, and high-tech exports. Notably, Tunisia ranks first in graduates in science and engineering. However, the report identifies a lack of a dynamic business environment and insufficient private sector involvement in R&D as primary obstacles to further growth.

In the tourism sector, Algeria has improved its standing in the 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) published by the World Economic Forum. Algeria rose four places to reach 89th globally among 110 countries, ranking ninth among the 23 African nations included in the study. The country has seen a 6.1% score increase since 2019. While Algeria showed significant progress, other African nations like Tunisia and Botswana saw declines in their respective tourism development rankings.
