Tunisia faces energy security and industrial modernization challenges

Tunisia is navigating significant shifts in its energy security and industrial landscape. According to the Arab Institute of Business Leaders (IACE), the country’s energy independence is declining as it remains heavily reliant on Algerian natural gas. This resource accounts for 65% to 70% of national gas consumption and nearly 98% of electricity production. With transit agreements with Algeria approaching expiration in 2027, experts suggest Tunisia must diversify its energy mix and expand renewable energy capacity to secure its future.

On the industrial front, Minister Slah Zouari has identified three priority areas for transformation: productive modernization through Industry 4.0, improved access to financing for SMEs, and energy transition. The goal is to move the Tunisian economy from simple subcontracting toward high-value engineering and innovation to remain competitive against global shifts in value chains.

Additionally, the logistics sector continues to see investment, with DACHSER celebrating 40 years of operations in Tunisia. The company announced the construction of a new 6,000 m² site in Sousse to support the growth of national exports across sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, and textiles.
