Tunisia and Senegal debate national finance laws
In Tunisia, the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Council of Regions and Districts and the Assembly of the Representatives of the People held a joint session to examine the draft 2027 Finance Law. Minister of Finance Michket Slama Khaldi presented the budget, which faced criticism from deputies. Legislators argued the draft lacks a clear strategy for investment and unemployment combatting. Concerns were raised regarding a projected deficit where expenditures are expected to reach 127 dinars for every 100 dinars collected. Deputies also questioned the profitability of public enterprises and the rising national debt.
In a separate legislative matter, the draft 2026 Amending Finance Law was referred back to the Finance and Budgetary Control Committee for further discussion. Minister of Economy, Finance and Planning Cheikh Diba requested the referral to allow for deeper examination of concerns raised by members of parliament and to seek potential compromises following recent tensions regarding the budgetary text.
