African education sector marks 2026-2027 academic year launch

Various African nations are marking the start of the 2026-2027 academic year with diverse developments. In Guinea, the school year officially commenced on October 5, with authorities in regions like Dinguiraye, Kankan, and Kindia reporting varying levels of student mobilization and infrastructure needs. Educational unions in Guinea have assured the public that no strikes are planned, opting instead for dialogue with the government.

In Togo, new educational opportunities have emerged, including Commonwealth scholarships for Master's and Doctoral studies in the UK, and specialized scholarships for veterinary sciences in Senegal. Meanwhile, Algeria has modernized its vocational training sector, welcoming over 400,000 trainees with 23 new specialties in fields like cybersecurity and renewable energy.

In Chad, World Teachers' Day was observed with calls for improved working conditions and professional status. However, the event was marked by tensions in N'Djamena due to union suspensions. In Côte d'Ivoire, the day was used to honor 37 education actors for their contributions to inclusive schooling.
