Tunisia beach cleaning program collects 6,000 m³ of waste

Tunisia's Ministry of the Environment has reported that nearly 6,000 m³ of waste has been collected from 152 beaches during the summer 2026 cleaning program. As of the first week of August, interventions have averaged approximately 8 m³ of waste per beach per day, though volumes vary significantly by location.

The Rafraf beach has been identified as one of the most heavily impacted areas. Due to intensified cleaning efforts involving two daily sessions, the site sees the collection of roughly 18 m³ of waste per day, equivalent to about 4.5 tonnes. The primary types of waste recovered include plastics, bottles, and food scraps.

To complement the physical cleaning, the Coastal Protection and Development Agency (APAL), in partnership with the National Waste Management Agency (ANGED) and WWF North Africa, is launching awareness campaigns. Under the slogan ‘The beach belongs to all of us: one hour is enough... let's clean it!’, these initiatives aim to promote marine preservation. Scheduled events include activities at Gammarth on August 16, Nabeul on August 23, and Sousse on August 26.
