Tunisia discusses digital cooperation and migration in New York

Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti held high-level meetings in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly to discuss digital cooperation and migration policy.

In discussions with Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization, Nafti explored opportunities to leverage artificial intelligence and digital transformation for socio-economic development. This aligns with Tunisia’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2026-2030. The Organization noted Tunisia’s progress in digitalization and its pioneering startup laws as models for other member states.

Regarding migration, Nafti met with European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner. Tunisia reaffirmed its position that it will not serve as a transit or settlement country for migrants. Nafti called on the European Union to increase support for voluntary return programs for sub-Saharan migrants in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and to expand regular migration pathways. He also met with IOM Director General Amy Pope to review the results of voluntary return and reintegration mechanisms.
