Tunisia expands wastewater treatment to combat river pollution

Tunisia's Ministry of the Environment is implementing several measures to combat pollution in the Oued Miliane and Medjerda river basins. The ministry has announced the construction or rehabilitation of six wastewater treatment plants across the Ben Arous, Zaghouan, and Siliana governorates.

Key infrastructure projects include the Sud Miliane 2 plant, which has reached 60% completion, and an integrated industrial plant at 70%. The El Fahs station is 85% complete, while Bir Mcherga stands at 55%. The Khalidia plant has officially entered operation, and work has commenced on the Jebel Oust facility.

In addition to infrastructure development, environmental inspections have identified significant violations. In the Manouba governorate, multidisciplinary teams discovered 11 environmental infractions across 18 sites, leading to proposals for the temporary closure of three factories. Furthermore, the National Environmental Protection Agency (ANPE) inspected 10 industrial establishments near Oued Miliane, establishing environmental upgrade programs to ensure compliance with national discharge standards.
