Tunisia faces widespread shortages of water, fuel, and essential goods

Tunisia is facing a multi-faceted crisis involving shortages of essential goods and services. Recent disruptions include difficulties accessing water, electricity, and food items such as poultry and bread. In response to rising costs and scarcity, the Tunisian Ministry of Commerce has implemented price caps on bottled mineral water and poultry products.

On August 20, 2026, a sudden strike by petroleum transport drivers at the Radès strategic oil zone caused panic and fuel shortages across the Greater Tunis area. This movement was driven by professional demands regarding social contributions and planned wage increases.

Amidst these shortages, social media rumors suggested that Algeria was exporting mineral water to Tunisia to alleviate the crisis. However, the Association of Algerian Beverage Producers (APAB) has officially denied these claims, stating there have been no official exports of mineral water to Tunisia, noting that Algerian producers are also managing their own local supply challenges.
