Tunisia faces water crisis following severe summer heatwave
Tunisia is facing significant water supply challenges following a severe heatwave in the summer of 2026. The crisis has been characterized by water shortages and electricity outages, leading to a surge in the demand for bottled water as citizens attempt to stockpile supplies due to a lack of confidence in state-provided services.
According to World Bank research, Tunisia is among the North African nations most exposed to climate stress. The current situation highlights interconnected vulnerabilities in water, energy, and logistics. Local merchants report that bottled water stocks, which typically last several days, are being depleted within hours due to panic buying.
In response, the Tunisian government has implemented an emergency program consisting of 81 projects, including infrastructure improvements, the use of non-conventional water resources, and leak detection systems. This program, costing 58 million dinars, aims to secure potable water access and manage the increasing pressures caused by rising temperatures.
