Tunisia fires coach Sabri Lamouchi after 5-1 defeat to Sweden in 2026 World Cup opener
In the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup co‑hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, several group matches produced notable results. Norway defeated Iraq 4‑1 with Erling Haaland scoring twice, while Argentina beat Algeria 3‑0 with Lionel Messi completing a hat‑trick. Belgium and Egypt drew 1‑1 in Seattle.
In Group F, Tunisia suffered a 5‑1 loss to Sweden at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey. Sweden’s goals came from Isak, Gyökeres, Svanberg and two by Ayari. Tunisia’s sole goal was scored by Rekik.
Less than 24 hours after the defeat, the Tunisian Football Federation announced the termination of head coach Sabri Lamouchi’s contract, marking one of the fastest managerial exits in World Cup history.
The tournament continues with remaining group fixtures and the schedule of matches through July, featuring 48 teams and 104 games.
