Tunisia heatwave reaches extreme temperatures in Kairouan

Tunisia is experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching extreme levels across much of the country. In Kairouan, temperatures were reported at 49.8°C, making it one of the hottest cities globally, trailing only Mehran, Iran, which recorded 50°C.

Several other Tunisian cities also recorded high temperatures, including Beja at 49.2°C, Jendouba at 48.1°C, Gabes at 48°C, Tozeur at 48°C, and Zaghouan at 47.9°C. The National Institute of Meteorology (INM) has placed most of the country under orange alert due to these conditions, which are significantly above seasonal norms.

The extreme heat has impacted infrastructure, leading the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company to implement temporary power outages in various cities and villages to maintain the stability of the electrical grid. While temperatures are expected to remain high, meteorologists predict a gradual decline starting Friday, with a more significant drop expected over the weekend.
