Tunisia launches first digital general agricultural census

Tunisia has officially launched its first digital general agricultural census, scheduled to cover the 2026 to 2027 period. Agriculture Minister Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh announced that field data collection will begin across the entire national territory in November 2026.

The initiative aims to establish an exhaustive and updated reference database regarding agricultural holdings, their geographic distribution, activities, resources, and structural characteristics. By utilizing advanced digital tools, such as electronic tablets, geo-location technologies, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the project seeks to ensure precise localization of farms and improve data quality.

Minister Ben Cheikh stated that the census is a strategic tool designed to support decision-making, guide both public and private investments, and improve the planning of development programs. The resulting data is intended to help the agricultural system better face economic, climatic, and food security challenges by transforming statistics into concrete programs to improve farmers' working conditions and sector investment.
