Tunisia maintains state control over A1 and A2 motorways

The Tunisian government has decided to maintain Tunisie Autoroutes as the concessionaire for two major highway axes, rejecting privatization in favor of state control over strategic infrastructure. Following a ministerial meeting led by Head of Government Sarra Zaâfrani Zenzri, a new concession agreement will be established for the A1 motorway (Hammam-Lif – M’saken), whose current contract expires in 2028.

Additionally, Tunisie Autoroutes will be granted the rights to operate the A2 motorway (Tunis – Jelma) once construction is completed, which is expected in 2027. The A2 project, costing approximately 1,700 million dinars, is the longest highway built in a single phase in Tunisia. The government emphasized that this decision ensures the continuity of public service, technical expertise, and state oversight of vital transport networks.

Zaâfrani Zenzri also called for the acceleration of A2 construction works, urging contractors to mobilize necessary resources to avoid delays and ensure the highway effectively connects Tunis to several interior regions.
