Tunisia mineral water supply expected to stabilize after shortages

Tunisia is seeing an improvement in the supply of bottled mineral water following a period of significant shortages in retail stores. Thouraya Tabassi, vice-president of the Consumer Defense Organization, stated on August 18, 2026, that production has returned to normal rhythms, which should lead to better availability in shops in the coming days.

The shortage, which began appearing in large supermarkets as early as late July, was driven by several factors including extreme summer heat, increased demand, electricity outages, and shortages of plastic packaging materials. While some authorities initially characterized the situation as an “artificial crisis” caused by social media rumors, industry representatives pointed to supply chain disruptions and raw material delays.

To prevent further market instability, consumer advocates are urging citizens to avoid panic buying and to purchase only what is necessary. Consumers are also encouraged to report any instances of hoarding or illegal stockpiling to the authorities.
