Tunisia Ministry of Family develops plan to combat begging and exploitation

Tunisia's Ministry of Family, Women, Childhood and the Elderly is finalizing a field study to address the rise in begging and the exploitation of vulnerable children and elderly persons. The ministry is developing a multisectoral action plan aimed at combating these phenomena and facilitating the reintegration of children into their families.

In response to inquiries from Member of Parliament Yosri Baouab, the ministry detailed its protective measures. Child protection delegates are tasked with intervening following reports of wandering or economic exploitation to ensure appropriate protection, which may include returning children to their families or placement in care facilities.

For the elderly, the ministry is implementing social and sanitary programs under the national multisectoral strategy for 2022-2030. These measures aim to protect older citizens from violence and discrimination while strengthening family support capacities. A dedicated helpline, 1833, has been established for reporting and guidance. Additionally, family mediation and medical or psychological follow-ups are being utilized to help reintegrate elderly individuals into their homes or appropriate care environments.
