Tunisia parliament passes law to restructure council for Tunisians abroad

On Tuesday, the Commission of Foreign Relations of the Assembly of the People's Representatives approved a revised draft law that reforms the National Council of Tunisians Residing Abroad (TRE). The amendment attaches the council to the Presidency of the government to improve coordination across ministries handling diaspora issues.

The new structure will include permanent members who are deputies elected in overseas constituencies, sixty representatives of the Tunisian diaspora, and observers from relevant ministries and public bodies. All members will serve voluntarily without salary or allowances. The commission completed hearings with the bill's initiator and various stakeholders before adopting the text in full and planning a report for the ARP bureau ahead of a plenary session.
