Tunisia political risk: Concerns over Islamist-leftist convergence

Former diplomat Elyes Kasri has raised concerns regarding the political and economic trajectory of Tunisia, specifically highlighting the potential for a convergence between leftist ideologies and political Islam.

Kasri argues that a combination of populism and influential leftist thought—which he suggests is often hostile to private enterprise and individual success—poses a significant internal risk. He warns of a phenomenon he terms ‘islamo-gauchisme,’ a hybrid of political Islam and leftist currents. According to Kasri, this alignment could exacerbate public debt, increase structural dependence on the state, and hinder necessary reforms intended to encourage private sector innovation and initiative.
