Tunisia and Algeria strengthen economic ties and agricultural trade

Tunisia and Algeria are strengthening economic ties and seeing significant shifts in their agricultural export sectors. Bilateral trade between Tunisia and Algeria has grown by 166% over the last five years, reaching approximately $2.76 billion. Recent meetings between business delegations and investment agencies have focused on facilitating new joint projects and leveraging the Algerian market.

In the agricultural sector, Tunisia has achieved record-breaking results in date exports. During the 2025–2026 season, Tunisia exported approximately 160,000 tonnes of dates, generating revenues exceeding one billion Tunisian dinars (over $300 million). While Algeria leads Africa in date export volume with 185,000 tonnes, Tunisia leads in total value due to the high quality and premium pricing of its Deglet Nour variety, which fetches roughly $2,400 per tonne compared to Algeria’s $993 per tonne.

Additionally, air traffic between France and Algeria has shown signs of slowing, with a 4.9% year-on-year decrease in August 2026, despite high overall passenger volumes of 3.9 million for the first eight months of the year.
