Tunisia records 983.1 million dinar food trade surplus through August 2026

Tunisia recorded a food trade balance surplus of 983.1 million dinars (approximately 327.7 million dollars) during the first eight months of 2026, according to data from the National Observatory of Agriculture (Onagri). This represents a 43.7% increase compared to the 684.1 million dinar surplus recorded during the same period in 2025.

The surplus was primarily driven by a 39.5% surge in olive oil exports, which accounted for 62.1% of the country's total food exports. Other significant export contributors included dates (9.1%) and fishery products (6.3%). While export values rose by 20.7% to reach 6 billion dinars, imports also increased by 17.1% to 5 billion dinars, largely due to a 13.2% rise in cereal imports.

Despite a 22% increase in the country's overall trade deficit, the food trade surplus helped offset the total deficit by 5.5%. The coverage rate for food imports improved to 119.3%.
