Tunisia targets 35% renewable energy share by 2035

Approximately 600 Tunisian companies are currently active in the renewable energy sector, out of 1,200 firms that have received investment authorizations in the field. This information was provided by Youssef Chbil, president of the Tunisian Organization for Clean Energy (STEP).

The country is pursuing a national energy strategy aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 35% by 2035, up from 9.2% recorded at the end of June 2026. The target production capacity is approximately 8,350 megawatts (MW).

To support this transition, a sectoral charter and a specific quality label for solar energy are being developed. This voluntary initiative aims to provide commercial advantages to participating companies while protecting consumers and addressing operational challenges in solar plant exploitation. The sector is expected to be a significant driver for the economy, with the national strategy projecting the creation of roughly 70,000 jobs in renewable energy projects and related industries.
