Tunisia: Thousands protest against President Kais Saied
Thousands of Tunisians marched through the streets of Tunis on October 17, 2026, in one of the largest demonstrations against President Kais Saied in recent years. The protest, which centered on Habib Bourguiba Avenue, was organized by the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) alongside nine other organizations, including the Tunisian National Order of Lawyers and the Tunisian League for Human Rights.
Demonstrators expressed grievances regarding a severe economic crisis characterized by rising costs of living, high unemployment, and frequent shortages of medicine, water, and electricity. Political demands included the restoration of democracy, the protection of freedom of expression, and the release of incarcerated political critics. Protesters also called for an end to restrictions on trade union rights and criticized the concentration of power within the presidency.
Participants included a diverse coalition of opposition parties, lawyers, doctors, journalists, and civil society activists. UGTT Secretary-General Salah Eddine Salmi addressed the crowd, stating that the current crisis results from the centralization of power and that silence is no longer acceptable. President Saied has rejected allegations that he is undermining democracy or acting as a dictator, attributing economic instability to his political opponents.
