Tunisian Agriculture Minister calls for accelerated hydraulic projects
Tunisian Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, has called for the accelerated completion and operationalization of ongoing hydraulic projects. During a periodic conference for regional agricultural development commissioners, Ben Cheikh emphasized that these measures are essential to strengthening water security and improving access to drinking water.
To achieve these goals, the Minister stressed the need for better coordination between central administrations and regional commissions, more intensive field monitoring of farmers and fishermen, and the timely release of allocated credits. He also highlighted the importance of rationalizing water resource governance, managing irrigation quotas based on production priorities, and maintaining structures to replenish groundwater levels.
Additionally, Ben Cheikh addressed the olive tree tuberculosis issue, recommending intensified prospecting, screening, and technical interventions to limit its spread, alongside increased scientific research and awareness campaigns.
