Tunisian journalists' union holds congress amid press freedom concerns
The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) has commenced its 7th congress in Tunis, scheduled to run through Sunday, October 12, 2026. The event aims to elect a new executive bureau for the 2026-2029 term. Following a review of candidate eligibility, 15 candidates were initially approved to run for leadership positions.
The congress takes place amid heightened political and media sensitivity in Tunisia. The proceedings are marked by the ongoing imprisonment of four journalists: Mourad Zeghidi, Borhen Bsaies, Zied El Hani, and Mohamed Yousfi. This situation has elevated discussions regarding press freedom, freedom of expression, and the increasing restrictions on the media profession within the country.
