Tunisian journalists' union to sue over defamation campaigns

The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) has announced plans to take legal action next week against individuals and social media pages involved in defamation and incitement campaigns targeting journalists.

The syndicate reported documenting more than 20 such campaigns since the beginning of 2026. These activities reportedly include attacks on privacy and reputation, challenges to professional credibility, the spread of misleading data, and hate speech. The SNJT noted that some incitement may also pose risks to the families of media professionals.

In preparation for legal proceedings, the SNJT has been documenting content, sources, and relevant facts. The organization is also compiling a list of administrators and participants involved in these campaigns. While the SNJT maintains that freedom of expression and the right to criticism are essential, it asserts that these rights do not justify defamation or incitement to hatred.
