Tunisian municipal workers announce two-day general strike

Municipal workers in Tunisia have decided to observe a two-day general sectoral strike. The dates for the protest will be determined by the General Federation of Municipal Agents in coordination with the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT).

The decision follows a protest by the administrative commission of the municipal sector against the blockage of negotiations and the failure to implement previously signed agreements. Key demands from the workers include the launch of a national program to renew municipal vehicle fleets and equipment, the provision of individual and collective protective equipment, and the adoption of a national occupational accident prevention plan.

Additionally, workers are calling for a revision of occupational health and safety regulations to address new risks in the waste management sector. Other grievances include the implementation of the general status for municipal agents, the payment of specific allowances, and reforms to the Code of Local Authorities. They also seek legal protection for municipal general secretaries and the implementation of laws prohibiting subcontracting.
