Tunisia's Caisse des Dépôts targets diaspora savings for regional investment

Néjia Gharbi, Director General of the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC), announced plans to create financial mechanisms that would direct the savings of Tunisians residing abroad toward productive projects in under‑financed regions. The initiative, part of the "WATANI" programme developed with the French Development Agency and Expertise France, aims to offer reliable, well‑structured investment products to the diaspora, thereby mobilising a previously untapped source of capital for regional development.

At the same time, commentators on Tunisia's public banking sector warn that internal audit and control functions must evolve to match strategic reforms. They argue that the central audit directorates of public banks need expertise in information‑system auditing to address risks from cyber threats, data integrity and algorithmic bias, ensuring that governance keeps pace with the broader financial inclusion goals set out in the 2026‑2030 plan.
