Tunja celebrates National Afro-Colombian Day with carnival

The city of Tunja held a carnival to commemorate National Afro-Colombian Day, featuring a parade that traveled from the Bosque de la República to the Plaza de Bolívar. Organized by the administration of Mayor Rafael Acevedo Pedroza, the event brought together educational institutions and representatives from Black, Raizal, and Palenquera communities.

The celebration included displays of music, dance, and traditional clothing to highlight the history and contributions of Afro-descendant peoples. Following the parade, activities continued at the Teatro Bicentenario with performances by gaitas and tambora groups, alongside a discussion titled ‘Afrocolombianidad: historia y raíces ancestrales’ focused on cultural identity and ancestral legacy.
