Tunnel 0 in Antioquia reaches breakthrough, linking Medellín to Caribbean ports

Construction of Tunnel 0, the 995‑metre segment of the Vía al Mar Gonzalo Mejía corridor in Antioquia, achieved a key milestone as the two excavation fronts met, confirming continuity of the tunnel. The project, spanning about 38 km with 18 tunnels, 31 bridges and 17 km of open road, aims to connect the Valle de Aburrá with the western region and the Urabá sub‑region, cutting travel time between Medellín and Urabá from eight hours to around four.

The tunnel, built at a cost of roughly 120 billion Colombian pesos, began excavation in August 2025 and involved about 1,200 workers, including 110 women. Governor Andrés Julián Rendón and Mayor Federico Gutiérrez highlighted its importance for regional competitiveness and cargo logistics to the Caribbean ports. Completion is targeted for late 2026, pending the installation of electromechanical equipment by the national government through Invías.
