Tunnel hoods installed for Mumbai‑Ahmedabad bullet train’s mountain tunnels
India has manufactured tunnel hoods for the first time to be fitted on the mountain tunnels of the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad high‑speed rail corridor. Seven tunnels in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat will receive the hoods at both portal ends.
The hoods act as pressure‑relief devices, easing the sudden air compression created when a train enters a tunnel at speeds above 300 km/h. By allowing gradual airflow, they reduce pressure‑wave blasts, lower noise (the “tunnel boom”), and improve safety and passenger comfort, aligning the project with international best practices for bullet‑train operations.
