Tupolev Tu-160 remains the world's largest supersonic combat aircraft

The Russian Tupolev Tu-160 remains the largest and heaviest supersonic combat aircraft ever constructed. Measuring 54.1 meters in length with a wingspan of 55.7 meters, the aircraft exceeds the dimensions of the Boeing B-52.

Known by pilots as the ‘White Swan’ due to its anti-glare white coating and by NATO as ‘Blackjack’, the Tu-160 features a maximum takeoff weight of 275,000 kg. Its airframe, which weighs over 100 tons empty, is composed of approximately 30 percent titanium.

A key technical feature is its variable-geometry wing system, which utilizes three distinct angles: 20 degrees for takeoff and landing, 35 degrees for high subsonic cruise, and 65 degrees for supersonic flight. This allows the aircraft to reach speeds of Mach 2.05. While it shares design similarities with the American Rockwell B-1 Lancer, such as twin engines and adjustable wings, the Tu-160 is significantly larger and prioritizes high-speed performance over stealth capabilities.
