Turano River drying prompts inquiry in Lazio region

Regional councilors in Lazio have raised concerns regarding the drying of the Turano River. Following alarms from citizens and environmental groups, Marta Bonafoni submitted an inquiry to the regional council regarding the river's critical state. For several months, the section of the river downstream from the artificial lake dam has been nearly dry, with some stretches reaching 1.5 kilometers of parched riverbed.

Enel, the entity managing the dam, stated that the water release of 200 liters per second complies with a 1950 regulation. However, critics argue this flow is insufficient to maintain the vital minimum flow required for the ecosystem. Local advocates point out that existing regulations suggest the flow should not fall below 300 liters per second in areas where irrigation is possible, prompting calls for the region to update outdated management rules.
