Turbulence diverts Denver flights to Colorado Springs, five injured

Strong turbulence caused 22 flights bound for Denver International Airport to be diverted to Colorado Springs Municipal Airport on Monday. Five passengers from different aircraft required emergency medical assessment, and one was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

United Airlines said 12 of its main‑line aircraft were among the diverted flights, which also included four international services. Colorado Springs Fire Department deployed medical teams to the ramp and gate areas to treat the injured passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration noted that pilots decide on diversion sites when weather conditions such as strong winds, low visibility, or severe turbulence arise.

Denver International experienced extensive delays and cancellations, with more than 850 flight delays and 44 cancellations reported that day. The incident highlights the challenges of flying near the Rocky Mountains, where mountain wave turbulence can be severe.
