Turbulence poses no danger to aircraft safety, experts say

Aviation authorities and researchers emphasize that turbulence is a natural atmospheric phenomenon caused by unstable air, thunderstorms, jet streams or mountainous terrain, and it does not threaten the structural integrity of modern aircraft. Aircraft are built to endure severe turbulence, and pilots rely on weather forecasts and onboard systems to avoid the worst conditions.

Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, led by Robert Sharman, have created a real‑time turbulence‑detection system that analyses airspeed, wind velocity and pressure. The technology is already in use by major carriers such as Air France, Qantas and Lufthansa, improving passenger comfort and reducing anxiety about turbulence.

Experts note that while turbulence can cause uncomfortable jolts, the likelihood of a crash caused solely by turbulence is virtually nil, reinforcing the overall safety record of air travel.
