Turceni advances energy transition through geothermal exploration and plant continuity

The city of Turceni is pursuing new energy directions through both industrial continuity and renewable exploration. Complexul Energetic Oltenia has initiated a procurement procedure for specialized road transport services for employees at the Turceni Thermal Power Plant. The estimated value of this framework agreement is 2,685,435 lei, with provisions extending into 2027. This move is seen as a signal of continued activity at the plant, countering previous reports that certain energy groups might be withdrawn by August 2026.

Simultaneously, the Turceni City Hall has obtained a license for deep geothermal resource exploration (exceeding 5,000 meters). This project, developed in partnership with Bankwatch România, aims to utilize geothermal energy for city heating, agriculture, and industry. The initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify the local economy and support a just energy transition in the Gorj region, which has historically been dependent on coal mining and thermal power.
