Turfgrass emerges as a high-value growth market in India
The turfgrass sector is emerging as a high-value, input-intensive segment of Indian agriculture, creating new opportunities for the country’s agri-input, irrigation, and farm machinery industries. As demand grows for golf courses, sports fields, and green spaces, the science used in traditional farming—including soil nutrition, pest protection, and water management—is being applied to turf maintenance.
The global turf protection market is projected to grow from USD 6.38 billion in 2025 to USD 10.58 billion by 2034. In India, the market is valued at approximately USD 180 million, with specific demand for cost-effective fungicides and nutrient solutions. Additionally, India is expected to be the fastest-growing major market for sports turf sensors, with a projected annual growth rate of 13.2 per cent through 2036.
Irrigation technology remains a critical link between traditional farming and turf management. Utilizing micro-irrigation systems, such as sprinklers and drip systems, can save between 20 to 48 per cent of water and 11 to 19 per cent of fertiliser, mirroring the benefits seen in India’s broader agricultural sector.
