Turin approves mosque project at former Nebiolo foundry
The City of Turin has authorized the construction of a mosque within the former Nebiolo foundry in the Aurora district. The project is part of a broader urban redevelopment plan for the industrial site, which includes a university dormitory, a library, and spaces dedicated to cultural activities and interreligious dialogue.
The Italian Islamic Confederation (CII) stated that approximately 80 percent of the space in the former foundry will be used for functions other than worship. However, the announcement has sparked significant political debate. Maurizio Marrone, Vice President of the Piedmont Region representing Fratelli d'Italia, has criticized the project, citing concerns over regional regulations and warning against what he termed the “wild Islamization” of the city.
In response, the Democratic Party (PD) in Turin defended the project, describing it as a modern, compliant place of worship that is open to the local community and serves as a guarantee for public safety. They accused Marrone of using the issue for electoral propaganda. The project continues to draw diverse perspectives regarding religious freedom, cultural integration, and the future of the city's religious landscape.
