Turin City Council urges government intervention for Metro Line 1

The Turin City Council has unanimously approved a motion to urge the Italian government to fund and support the extension of Metro Line 1, specifically the Fermi-Cascina Vica section. The motion, spearheaded by Ludovica Cioria of the Democratic Party, calls for the allocation of necessary funds to ensure construction continuity and requests the appointment of a special commissioner with extraordinary powers.

The project is currently facing a severe crisis. Works have stalled because the contractor, Italiana Costruzioni Infrastrutture (ICI), is reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy, leading to site blockades by workers. The council seeks an urgent hearing with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to address the crisis, accelerate new procurement procedures, and coordinate efforts between national ministries and local territories.

Mayor Stefano Lo Russo and Transport Councilor Chiara Foglietta expressed support for the measure, hoping the new Financial Law will provide the required funding. An institutional march is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, to demand the completion of this strategic infrastructure project.
