Turin launches road tests for autonomous driving via Envelope project

The Envelope project has entered its operational phase in Turin, launching road tests for autonomous and connected vehicles. This European initiative integrates advanced 5G networks with urban infrastructure to test real-world interactions between vehicles and digital environments.

Two primary testing scenarios are being implemented in the city. The first involves an autonomous vehicle collecting and transmitting real-time data from a simulated accident to reconstruct the event in 3D. The second scenario tests how vehicles detect obstacles, such as construction sites, and share that information with other vehicles to autonomously update maps and routes.

The project involves several partners, including the City of Turin, Fondazione Links, Tim Enterprise, HPE, Nextworks, and Teoresi Group. Teoresi Group is providing prototype vehicles equipped with LiDAR, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and GPS. Beyond technical testing, the project aims to address European regulatory challenges, such as the need for interoperable digital maps and standardized certification procedures for autonomous mobility.
